Teaninich 17 year old 55.9% 700ml

A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt whisky from Teaninich distillery at Alness in the coastal highlands north of Inverness. It was matured in American oak hogsheads filled in 1999. There is limited availability worldwide. It is enjoyable as an apéritif or with Oriental cuisines and rewards more subtle exploration. On the surface straightforward and zesty, it combines grassy and citrus notes to great effect, while below a rich and light sweetness provides a welcome introduction to its complexity. In appearance it is pale golden. To the nose it is approachable and gently drying. At first citrus-fruity and fragrant, it is followed by a spicier edge with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg with a late suggestion of almonds. Sweet notes then dominate balanced by a softly spicy background. Adding a little water brings up more soft fudge. To the palate it is oily and sweet. An initial burst of citrus is swept away by candied sweetness and a prickle of spice. Water softens the candy sweetness, revealing more leafy notes, sweet and creamy toffee and more orchard fruit. The finish is lengthy and warming with spicy oak-wood, a pinch of white pepper and a lingering candied sweetness.
